In regards to the article, I think that it can not be overstated how fragile life is and how quickly it can start and end. Through all of my life experiences dealing with death I think that it only enhances the idea that you have to live your life to the fullest while you are able. I also realize that death is a much deeper reality than I did to begin the semester. I hope that the next death that happens in my life that I will be able to help others, and myself better cope with the loss and the entire situation in itself.
Like Will said, life is incredibly fragile and it can end so quickly, even in someone who seems to be perfectly healthy. I think it is also important to note that everybody has a different reaction to death and dying. Obviously Susan Gubar used it as a way to be an inspiration and mentor to people who came after her who would walk the same path she did. But a lot of people wouldn't have the same reaction Gubar did. They might get down and discouraged or give up. I guess I think that part of how you live is how you die. Gubar broke through obstacles in her professional life, being a woman with different ideas in a time when that was frowned upon. But she lived tough, and she died tough. A lot of how people are remembered are how they die, and I think that it is important to be remembered well. If we have a purpose on this life, and I think we do, then being remembered in a positive way seems to be a good indication of how we lived. And if we die how we live, and we die well, then we will be remembered well, and if we are remembered well, then that means that we probably lived well because of how well we died.
It is so glad to see that Gubar has continued to do what she loves despite being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I think the fact that she is continuing to write and write about her own story is a key aspect to why she hasn't thrown in the towel or been zapped by the cancer to this point. When people are doing what they love to do, everything else seems to go a lot smoother as well.
It is incredible how Mrs. Gubar continues to live her life to the fullest through this very difficult time. Many people would find ways to feel sorry for themselves, but Gubar finds ways to fight back and show the world that life can go on through the worst time in your life. One interesting thing I found in this article was how Gubar's friends and family didn't know how to respond to her illness. She knew she was very sick and did not look like herself, but she kept hearing from friends that she looked great and to keep fighting to get better. I guess when your the one with the illness you just want to hear the truth. Some people, but not all, come to the facts that they may never get back to what they used to feel like, but they continue with life the best of their abilities. Gubar realized the facts and she faced them through her writing and others writing. Through writing it seemed Gubar forgot about all the pain she was going through and she was striving to help others that come upon her illness in the future.
Life is short and it flies before everyone's eyes. In a moment you are living young and living without care, and then suddenly things can change in an instance and then comes a family and work and then grandchildren. It is life. And while it may be short, it should always be appreciated, no matter what. There are hard times and coping with the end may be hard for most, but life is here and life is now. If you worry too much about death, you cannot enjoy life. So, while death is scary, uneasy, unsettling, unknown, and unadmirable, it should always remain serious, but at the same time it can be a reminder that we are human and that we truly have no control and so we should simply live and be happy and make good choices.
